Over the course of a 3 week sprint, my team and I had the opportunity to help client and founder of Silverberry Genomix, create an iPhone application where users can easily access their DNA reports. Although the online reports are mobile responsive, the information is extremely text-heavy and not easily digestible.
We figured out a simpler way for users to understand their unique fitness composition and to remain active in the platform.

OVERVIEW

TITLE: Silverberry Genomix (iOS native app)
GOAL: Allow users to access their report results in a simple, enjoyable way; Educate users of the benefits they can access in their assessments
DURATION: 3 Weeks
MY ROLE: User Research/Insights, UX/UI Design, Wireframing, Interactive Prototype, Visual, Motion, and Brand Design

The Persona: Health Seeker/Planner/Tracker
The focus is on people who want to lose weight, cut down on unhealthy eating habits, and find optimal exercise plans.

The Business: Silverberry Genomix
Silverberry Genomix is a DNA lifestyle company that uses AI and genetic assessments to optimize fitness plans and daily wellness decisions that leads to helpful and positive lifestyle changes.

Users who want to use Silverberry Genomix as a means for weight loss need a way to access their personalized DNA reports and interpret this information in an efficient manner.

Why do people obtain DNA reports?

  • Family history of disease

  • Acquire unknown information

  • Optimizing health

  • Weight related concerns

RESEARCH

Content Strategy

Despite their efforts, Americans are often unsuccessful in the pursuit of considerable weight loss. With the help of Silverberry DNA reports, we can create an IOS app that will help users to personalize their weight loss plan together with a medical professional according to their biological predispositions.

Hypothesis

If users are able to share their DNA reports with their chosen healthcare professional(s), the personalized information generated by Silverberry could be explained to them in a more efficient and digestible manner.

We believe that by broadening Silverberry’s scope to this untapped market, users will be more satisfied with their overall experience and in turn be more inclined to use Silverberry as their primary generator of data driven health intelligence.

User Research Purpose

Find pain points of existing users, specifically regarding
(1) site navigation, (2) user interface design, and (3) hierarchy of information

Initial Usability Tests

Task: Based on results generated from the web, identify where you would navigate in order to find info that pertains to your goal of losing weight

  • Participants were confused as to where to go for this →  i.e. Lean and Fit or Weight Management?

  • Once they arrived at Weight Management, they were confused as to what the subcategories meant

Competitive & Comparative Analysis

Comparative Insights

  • Leading weight management apps have features that promote high user retention rates (ie: scanning barcodes, sync with apple health data, etc.)

  • An ability to connect with other users and view weight loss progress in real time is considered very attractive to our persona → Silverberry needs these to be competitive in this market

Competitive Insights

  • Silverberry lacks features that are important for a health seeker/tracker/planner

  • Silverberry’s messy and confusing IA detracts from personalized information regarding an optimal weight loss plan

  •  Silverberry lacks features that promote user engagement and user retention (connect with other users, regularly updated reports, etc.)

  • The ability to share DNA reports with healthcare professionals remains an untapped market

User Feedback on
Paper Prototypes

  • Why limited to only weight journey?

  • “Report page is busy”

  • “Too many pop-ups”

  • Some respondents disliked polarizing language

  • iOS Guidelines

Pivot!

  • Sharing weight loss journey and connecting with other users is currently out of scope for the business

  • We can promote user engagement by incorporating healthcare professionals who are able to explain results in a digestible and actionable manner

  • So… we decided to add a feature that allows Silverberry users to share their DNA reports and progress with a third party healthcare professional

  • We also designed a feature that allows them to chat with this 3rd party
